Difficulty: Moderately difficult (absolute sure-footednessand no problems with vertigo essential)

From the hut in a south-westerly direction, we walk past the turn to Trögler and continue to the second fork in the trail, where the sign for „Aperer Freiger“ directs us over the stream and up past Blue Lake. We continue over the orographic right-side moraine of the Sulzenau Glacier, in the direction Fernerstube until the sign „Aperer Freiger“. Then we hike over block work, following the painted markings until the look-out point called Hundsheim. From here we continue in a southerly direction on the high plateau, always following the markings until the ascent of the western slope of the Aperer Freiger. The last hour involves hiking over the light Blockgrad until the summit. Upon descent, it is possible to take a different route from Hundsheim over the Fernerstube, thereby completing a loop trail.

We follow the trail towards Nürnbergerhütte, in an easterly direction over the Sulzauer river bridge. Before the trail descends into the valley basin of the Freiger glacier, we take a left turn over the high grassy knoll, past a small lake to the look-out bench, which stands on a distinctive stone platform. From the bank we can see the entire surroundings of Sulzenau, from the floor of the Sulzenau Alm (with its farm buildings) over the cliff-dropping waterfall, to the hut, which sits on her throne over the natural glacial cauldron. To the left we can also see the entire Trögler ridge, the Sulzenau glacier, the Sulzenaukogel. And at the very back, we can even see as far as the Freiger glacier, Urfallspitze, Niederl and Mairspitze. On the opposite side, the Ruderhofspitze with the Grawawandferner captures your eye.

A grandiose panoramic overview of the stunning high alpine country of the Stubai Alps.

We leave Sulzenauhütte in a south-westerly direction, towards the Sulzenau glacier. At the first fork in the trail, we follow the trail towards Trögler until Pfaffenlehner, which is where the upper half of the rockclimbing wall is, before the trail to Trögler becomes really steep. The Pfaffenlehner is a natural look-out turret from which we can see everything behind the hut in the high valley. It is the first opportunity to clearly see a view of the Zuckerhütl – with 3507m, the highest peak of the Stubai Alps. The majestic Zuckerhütl throned by Sulzenau glacier is simply alluring.

To the Blue Lake (Blaue Lacke) we leave Sulzenau hut in a south-westerly direction, towards Sulzenau glacier. At the first fork in the trail, we walk past the sign directing us towards the Trögler. At the next fork, we follow the sign ‘Blaue Lacke’ and cross over the river via a bridge. After a light ascent through the ‘Almrosen’ flowers, we reach the Blue Lake. A beautiful relaxing walk, good for families with small children. The perfect length to kill some time or work up a hunger before enjoying lunch back at the hut. The blue Lake lays on the Stubai high trail, so when you hike along, come and visit it.

England has it’s Stonehenge, but we have our holy crain ground at the blue lake, come and see which one is more impressive!!!

According to Wikipedia cairns are used as trail markers in many parts of the world and when you come and visit the blue lake you have the impression that we have collected them all!

It’s absolutly worth seeing it – come and build yourself a monument.

Directly beside the hut is a 60m long steel cable, which stretches over the Sulzauer river. With our harness equipment, it is possible to experience the flying fox: weightlessly gliding above the rushing glacial river. It is such a unique, exhilarating, crazy feeling – and quite hard to come by, in such remote wilderness – that we believe everyone should experience it once! But care must be taken to use our flying fox equipment safely. We recommend a small chat with us, so we can explain how to use it.

The steel flying fox cable can also be used with the other fixed cables in the zone, to experience the fantastic Wild Water Klettersteig ‘Sulzenauschlucht’ (Sulzenau Canyon).

The trail leaves Sulzenauhütte in an easterly direction over the Sulzauer river via the footbridge. There follows a 50m ascent into the basin of the Freiger glacier (Seitenmoränen, Stirnmoränen). Further over the Grünau stream to the side moraine up to Grünausee. From here, the sign points us in a south-easterly direction over light terrain until the former Grünau glacier. Until around the middle of summer, this section of the trail involves a reasonably steep snowfield; later in the summer we must hike through loose rocks up to the Seescharte. From here we continue up the marked Freigerweg until the next big snowfield (Grübel glacier) and then turn right over gravel and block work up to the summit of Gamsspitzl.

Q: Firstly…what is geocaching?

A: The world’s biggest, most addictive treasure hunt…

According to Wikipedia, geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a GPS receiver to find containers – called “geocaches” or just “caches” – anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and perhaps also items for trading, such as toys or trinkets. In other words, it’s a high-tech game of hide and seek.

A few years ago, some geocachers found us up at Sulzenau and decided it was the perfect place to hide some caches. Today there is no less than 10 caches hidden in the area. There are two along the trail leading up to the hut: one near the Grawa waterfall, and one near the Sulzenaualm. On higher altitude above the Sulzenauhütte there is a cache on the großer Trögler, one at Blue Lake and one at the Niederl on the way to Nürnbergerhütte.

On top of that we have installed a geocache parcours as a variation of a multi cache. Along the beautiful lakes in the Grünau area we have hidden 5 caches that have crazy names like ‘Versteinertes Pferd’ or ‘Into the Wild’. Looking for those 5 caches takes you on a lake-hopping tour in one of the most beautiful spots on this planet. The whole tour is designed as a day trip from Sulzenauhütte, taking approx. 6 hours to find all of them and return to the hut. We offer documentation with photos and coordinates of this tour, and even have two GPS devices to rent. For overnight guests, this service is absolutely free. It is a great way to add an element of fun to a hike, especially for children…but adults will find themselves addicted, too!

Difficulty: Moderately difficult (absolute sure-footedness and no vertigo problems essential)

The trail to the Großer Trögler is a part of the Stubai high trail and it leaves Sulzenauhütte in a westerly direction to the trail fork Trögler, before turning right over moderately steep terrain (moraine / high alpine landscape) until the Pfaffenlehner. The path then becomes steep, serpenting its way up the mountain, with sections secured with steel cable to aid a safe ascent to the Kleiner Trögler. From here, further left on the ridge is moderately difficult until the summit cross of the Größer Trögler. On the other side it is possible to descend to the Dresdnerhütte. This trail is no more difficult than the trail to Größer Trögler.

However, we strongly advise to avoid this trail in wet weather or after snowfall – in these conditions, it is extremely dangerous.

The trail to Lake Grünau leaves Sulzenauhütte in an easterly direction over the glacial river via a Bridge leading to Übergschritt. Then follows a 50m ascent into the basin of the Freiger glacier (Seitenmoränen, Stirnmoränen). Further still, we cross over the Grünau river to Seitenmoräne until reaching Grünausee (free translated: ‘Green Lake’). The lake lies beautifully embedded in the green meadow. The crystal clear colour of the lake is breath-taking. A rewarding hike along one of the most beautiful parts of the High Trail.
